Kay was an artist ahead of her time, a talented painter and printmaker who created work of such endearing quality that, over 20 years after her death, she still shines out as one of the most impressive artists East Anglia has ever seen.
Her work is incredibly versatile. Just take a look in the 'Galleries' section above and you can see watercolours of the local landscape and her beloved Norwich; abstracts; screen prints; her much sought-after ‘bodies' and ‘flowers’; powerful watercolours of the building of Castle Mall (now Castle Quarter) back in the early 90s, where she was artist in residence...and much more. Her pictures are packed with colour and vibrancy, and use a vast array of different mediums.
Kay Ohsten was a true ‘Norwich’ artist, a graduate of Norwich Art School - where she later taught graphic design - and a member of the Norwich 20 Group, a prestigious collection of the county's very best artists. She trained as a draughtswoman, and had a passion for architecture and structure. But with that skill she was able to be flexible, and her work is never tight or photographic. She was very much an impressionist, using the lightest touch with superb skill and technique to produce work that was bright, free and powerful. This epitomised her work.
She lived in Pulham St Mary for most of her life, where she raised a family and developed a passion for the countryside, which can be seen in so much of the art she created.
The work you see in the 'Galleries' on this site is just a fraction of the Kay Ohsten collection. If you would like to see it in person , you are interested in buying a piece, or you want to find out more about any of the artwork shown here, please get in touch.
